Super Bowl Sunday Super Retreat

What great fun we had at our Super Bowl retreat! We "kicked-off" the day with a delcious breakfast at Lulu's Cafe! When we returned to the shop, the "teams" made a Charm Square Tote. We breaked for half time - Lunch! Chili and Black Bean Tortilla casserole were the fare plus yummy cupcakes and apple crisp! Then Beth arrived and showed us how to make these adorable snap bags using a old fashioned retractable measuring tape as the clasp. Cool! Couldn't make it? Maybe next time!

Brownstone Quilt Show - November 6 and 7th

I was thrilled to be invited to the Heritage Quilters of the Hudson Palisades 30th anniversary party! After a morning of classes, where two of my instructors, Beth Jones and Pam Capen taught, they had a delicious luncheon. Marion Piehler, Boots Breden and Mary Kennedy - 3 of the charter members, were present and shared their memories of the guilds humble beginnings. Long time member, Rachel Kaufman, shared a display of all her antique notions and sewing machines. Very cool! It was so good to see this event well attended.Kudos to the ladies who organized the event...thier favors of quilted wallets and fabric cupcakes were adorable! I have in my heart a soft spot for the Heritage Quilter as that is where I learned all about quilting! I wish them another 30 + years! Happy Anniversary!

Despite the torrential rain we had a great turn out for a rainy morning at 8:30 am! The other highlight was that several ladies had their quilts done from last month! Way to go! This month the quilters were treated to Pumpkin Pecan waffles. Delicious! They also recieved a pattern by the same name! Next Breakfast Club meeting is Saturday, Nov. 14 at 8:30 am. Last Thursday, Lisa, Robin and Gigi, Army wives from Westpoint, drafted us into helping them sew tote bags for other Army wives who will be attending a retreat this spring. The totes are made from the husbands' uniforms! Several customers turned out and the girls were so thankful for the help! Want to help? We'll be working on the totes again on Nov. 19 at 10 am! It's a great cuase supporting our troops and their families!

Fall Fling at Hemlock Point Lodge

I stole away with a group of customers for a weekend retreat in Thompson, PA at Hemlock Point Lodge. A beautiful setting! We thought we would enjoy the fall foliage and get some sewing done, but instead was greeted with snow when we arrived! Despite the cold temps, we enjoyed the comroderie, the good food and got lots of sewing done! Maybe you can join us next time?

Staycation at Matterhorn Nursery

This year Quilter's Crossing held a two day "Staycation" at lovely Matterhorn Nursery! The weather held for us on Saturday and we enjoyed touring the gardens. We always pick up some little tidbit to make our gardens grow! We feasted on delcious food for two days and sewed to our hearts content! We had some fun and games with our Quilting Yankee Swap and with a QC quiz - where we had a 3 way tie between Gig, Corrine and Pat! We made new friends with a group of ladies who joined us from Connecticut. May be you can sneak away with us next time?!

Michael and I traveled to St. Louis at the end of August for our first Baby Loch Tech! Hard to believe Baby Lock could improve their sergers but they out did themselves! We learned alot and can't wait to get the Koala cabinets, Sashiko and the new Evolution serger into the shop!

Jodi and I met these two wonderful gals, Robin and Lisa, when they stopped by the shop to buy lining fabric for a tote bag project. As they began to explain their project to us we were so moved. Army wives at Westpoint, they are making 140 tote bags for fellow Army wives whose husbands are on duty out of old uniforms. What a great ideas! They were unsure how to construct the tote, so they spent a day with us at QC and we assisted them in designing a pattern. Isn't it darling? But what an undertaking! So we offered them help! Kids Quilt Camp was awesome! Allie and Heidi really sharpened their sewing skills! They made a cool i-pod case, a tote bag by recycling their jeans and an adorable halter top! The girls had a great time learning to use the serger - but look out Mom and Dad - they both had a lead foot-doesn't bode well for driving! In addition to all their projects, they even had time to help sew together a charity quilt for Meals on Wheels' Alert and Alive Program. Way to go girls!!

Once a month we have a "Quilt Flix" night. We show a movie, have dinner and work on a quilt based on the movie. May's movie was "Sleepless in Seattle" and the quilt was a coffe cup quilt! Mike treated everyone to an awesome dinner of gourmet panninis. Yummy! June's Quilt Flix is on Friday, June 12 from 6-9pm and the movie is "Father of the Bride." Why not join us?

Baby, Baby, Baby!

Joann's grandson, Anthony, was born with a cleft lip. After meeting with his surgeon, Dr. Hoffman of Staten Island University Hospital, she learned of the prevalance of this disfiguration, not only in under developed countrites, but here in the US as well. Dr. Hoffman spoke about those living in poverty here as well as in latin America. After hearing Dr. Hoffman stories of babies going home wrapperd in towels - even paper towels, Joann was moved and of course felt each child should have a quilt! So a group of our Friday night strippers got together and made baby blankets. Now it will become an ongoing charity for our shop. If we are feeling an economic pinch, just imagine those already in financial need? Dr. Hoffman is taking our first group of quilts with him this week to South America. The next grouping will be distributed here in New York by the not-for-profit organization called Newborns in Need. Want to help? Sew with us on May 16 at 10 am.

Our Country Wedding Ring quilt class is moving along! The students have their checkerboard blocks together and began making their bias stems! Applique is next!

I've gotten away from blogging with this very busy month at the shop!Yikes! But I'm getting back on track! We kicked off our new class called "QuiltFlix" - a combination of quilting, dinner and a movie in place of our international mysteries. The ladies were treated to dinner and a viewing of "Under the Tuscan Sun" while making a great quilt! Next month's "QuiltFlix" is Sleepless in Seattle!" Reserve your seat today! It was packed ...almost standing room only! Then Anita Grossman Solomon came to visit and teach her fabulous Old Italian Block quilt using her neat and quick paper piecing technique! We kicked off our first Cabin Fever week with a much requested all night quilting session! I was a bit skeptical, but it was well attended! The ladies enjoyed pizza, popcorn and coffee to get them through the night! As an extra special incentive to stay awake, they were offered special sales on fat quarters, batiks, books and patterns thru the night! What fun! Even Gracie stayed up!

Sunday, Feb. 22, long arm professional, Cheryl Winslow, taught a class on choosing the proper quilting designs for your quilts. She gave us some excellent food for thought regarding our fabrics, choice of thread and scale of the quilt designs. The class was well attended with over 10 people who shared their quilt tops and generated alot of discussion! Keep an eye out for a repeat of this sensational class! Also Sunday morning, when I arrived for class, I found a "love" note from THE Mark Lipinski! He came to see our shop and arrived after 5 on Saturday! I dropped him a line and invited him back! We enjoyed a day stitching for others! Lacey Hill generously gave a free class on how to make her lounge pants. Last Friday night, we had the pleasure of "repairing" bears donated by Sue Rutledge of Hometown Products. Gracie then dressed the bears and they were boxed up to be given to People to People for distribution during this holiday season. It was alot of fun - you'd be suprised what a bunch of furry, cuddly bears can bring out in a group of people! A light supper and alot of laughs were shared by all! Thanks to all who participated!

Hoppin Happenings at QC!

We have had a very busy week here at QC. We kicked off the weekend with our "Tie One On" day and had two FREE apron classes! It was alot of fun and they all turned out great! Now I know what these ladies will be giving as gifts this year! On Monday, Baby Lock educator, Margaret Tully came to visit and to introduce our QC customers to Baby Lock's Evolve serger. Margaret's down home manner and Southern sense of humor had everyone in stitches! On Tuesday, Margaret gave a class on making gift bags with the Evolve serger. Everyone loved working on these fantastic machines and took them home as an early holiday present for themselves! Plus the HQ 16 was humming and Michelle finished her first quilt! And it was king size! Congrats Michelle!

Quilter's Crossing's 1st Daycation at Matterhorn Nursery

QC held it's first "Daycation" at Matterhorn Nursery in Spring Valley, NY on Saturday, October 18, 2008. The weather cooperated and we had a spectacular day of sewing and quilting surrounded by beautiful gardens. We enjoyed a delicious catered lunch and a private tour of the grounds. The Rose Cottage was adorable! An awesome time was had by all! Watch for details...everyone requested a trip back for an second Daycation in the spring!
